Moses Dickey
Brass dial signed ‘Moses Dicky / The Maker’. Seconds subdial above center and calendar aperture below. Walnut Chippendale case. Private collection. Circa 1760-65. Height 8’ 4 1/2”.
Dickey worked in the early settlement of Paxtang, just across the river from Cumberland County, and lived next to Paxtang Presbyterian Church. Also a millwright and a gunsmith, he died in 1765. Assuming that this movement and this case have always been together, this means that the maker of this specatular, fully developed Chippendale clock case was active very early in the Susquehanna River Valley. It is believed that this cabinetmaker also made the very similar cases of the early Jacob Herwick brass dial clocks, and perhaps the John Greer case as well.
