Federal Serpentine Sideboard
This fine Baltimore sideboard was found ‘in the rough’. There were no noticeable previous repairs. The finish that still remained had darkened so much that the figure of the wood underneath was totally obscured.
The work proceeded in two stages. It was first necessary to stabilize and patch the substrate to which the highly figured veneers are applied. The case itself was fairly sound but the doors were coming apart in several places.
The second stage was repairing the veneers and replacing the missing sections. Most of the edging around the top and along the bottom of the case was gone.
