Andrew Simon Carlisle Tall Clock
Andrew Simon placed ads in The Carlisle Gazette on February 5th 1808 and November 5th 1808. Except for this clock there is only one other example of his work known, which is said to be circa 1803, signed by Andrew Simon, Strasburg. But the whereabouts of this other clock is unknown to me. It would seem that Simon did not stay in Carlisle very long. He is not in the tax lists. He did business in the home of a Jacob Weaver, wagonmaker, in York Street (later called Hanover Street).
This clock is of the best workmanship with the minutes, hour, date and sweep seconds hands off the center. The dial decoration, the moon dial painting in particular, is of remarkable sophistication.
Everything is original and unaltered, except for the feet which had probably been damaged at one time and replaced with crude turned feet. I recreated the lower molding and French feet, appropriate to the style of the case.
